Abstract

732,020. Cylinders; joint-making packing. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES. July 28, 1953 [Aug. 7, 1952; Sept. 4, 1952], No. 20873/53. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (3). [Also in Group XXVII] A highly resilient packing 6<SP>1</SP>, e.g. a ring of asbestos, which is inserted between a cylinder head 4 and a flange 1 of a cylinder liner, particularly a wet liner, is placed under an initial stress such that under varying gas pressure in the cylinder the packing has the characteristic of a weak or highly resilient spring connection, while between the cylinder block 3 and the co-operating face of the head 4 the sealing contact is such that the tightening - down pressure produced between the cylinder and the face of the head while the initial stress is being imparted to the packing 61 results in a non-elastic or slightly elastic connection. As shown in Fig. 1, the packing 6<SP>1</SP> is disposed in an annular recess 5 of the flange 1 and is protected from combustion gases by an annular wall 8. That part of the joint between the cylinder block and head may be formed by a metal-to-metal contact'or a sheet of metallic or non-metallic foil, or a coating of graphite or silicone-varnish applied, preferably, to the, surface of the cylinder head. In modifications, (a) a packing unit 6, Fig. 2, comprising a U-shaped ring 6a filled with metal rings 6b, or asbestos; is located in the recess 5 of the flange 1 with the open side of the " U " facing the cylinder space, there being a gap 9 between the annular wall 8 and the head 4 to allow access of gas pressure to promote spreading .of the ring 6a, and to increase the sealing pressure, (b) the paking is formed by spirally winding a curved metal band 7a, Fig. 3, the convolutions of the packing being held together by copper cover rings 10 and the convex side of the band facing the cylinder space; (c) Fig. 5 (not shown), two rings as shown in Fig. 2 are disposed concentrically within a single recess in the flange 1; (d) Fig. 6 (not shown), two rings as shown in Fig. 2 or Fig. 3, or one of each kind, are housed in concentric recesses separated by an annular wall; (e) Fig. 7 (not shown), a ring or rings as shown in Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 is or are located partly in a recess or recesses formed in the flange 1 and partly in an oppositely disposed recess, or recesses in the head 4; and (f) a packing ring as shown in Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 is disposed in a recess 5, Fig. 8, separated from the cylinder space by an annular wall 8a provided with recesses 13 forming a labyrinth-like path and projecting into a recess 12 in the head 4.
