Abstract

698,764. Pipe connections. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. June 13, 1951, No. 14041/51. Class 99 (i). The sections 1, 2. 3 of an exhaust pipe are connected by a spherical joint formed partly or wholly by the pipe sections, and sealing between the sections is effected by a metal piston ring 10 located in a groove which may be formed in a ring 6 having a spherical surface and secured to the inner pipe by annular grooves 7, 8. To prevent separation of the joints the spherical portions of the pipes may be rolled inwardly; alternatively, inwardly bent tongues are used. Play in the joints may be taken up by the application of a resilient axial pressure, e.g. that of a spring at one end of the pipe; alternatively, axial tension or compression may be applied by helical springs, for example, associated with the joints. In a modification, the ring 10 is replaced by a layer of asbestos or graphite-containing material.
