Abstract
731,486. Electromagnetic relays. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 15, 1953 [May 24, 1952 ; May 24, 1952], No. 13659/53. Class 38 (5). A multi-contact electromagnetic relay comprises a plurality of fixed contact wires or springs 51 and movable contact wires or springs 50, 52 co-operating therewith, the moving contact wires each comprising two parallel wires which co-operate with a single fixed contact wire. The fixed and moving contact members are secured at their rearward ends to an insulating block 8 so as to be substantially parallel to each other, a further insulating member 14 being provided to reduce chatter of the contacts. At the front ends the fixed contacts are held in an insulating block 23 which is positioned relatively to the core 1 of the electromagnet 5 by a plate 25 which also services to align the ends of the E-shaped core 1 and, by virtue of a projection 26 therefrom, to form a back stop for the armature 11. The armature 11 is U-shaped, the ends 10 thereof being held by the ends of a U-shaped spring 9 about which ends the armature pivots, the spring 9 forming a restoring member for the armature. When the electromagnet 5 is energized the armature 11 assumes a position along the top surface of the core 1 and in doing so moves an " operating card 30 " downwardly and, since the moving contacts 50, 52 abut edges of the card 30 and that the contacts 50, 52 are pre-stressed, will cause the contacts 50 to break contact with the fixed contacts 51 and contacts 52 to make therewith. Upon deenergization the relay is returned to its normal position by springs 9, 16, 55. By suitably contouring the card 30 any desired sequence of makes and breaks may be achieved, some earlier than others, and the card 30 may be changed for another to give a different set of operations. In a second embodiment the fixed contact wires and springs are arranged at right angles to the moving contact wires or springs.
