731,416. Opening bottles. HARDY, C. Dec. 14, 1953, No. 34742/53. Class 125 (2). A remover for headed bottle-corks comprises a stirrup-shaped member 1 formed at its lower end with a channel 22 fitting the bottleneck, and a pair of jaws 20, for gripping the cork head, carried at the lower end of a spindle 7 passing through a bore in the top of the stirrup. The upper end of the spindle is screw-threaded at 6 and is engaged by a handle 5 having lugs 4<SP>1</SP> bearing on the underside of a flange 3 on the stirrup so that, when the handle is turned, the spindle and the jaws are raised to extract the cork. The spindle 7 has grooves 26 engaging keys in the stirrup bore to prevent relative rotation. For different cork diameters and for clamping the jaws on to the cork, the jaws are provided with upper threaded bores engaging left- and right-hand threaded ends 17 of a spindle 16 rotated by a keyed finger piece 19 and mounted on the lower end of spindle 7. For different bottle neck diameters, liners are provided for the channel 22.
