[Also in Groups VI and XIV] Chord-like strips 11 can be cut off a vegetable root 10 by a U-shaped right-angled knife 6 protruding from the middle of a bar 1 attached to a reciprocated handle 3, the actual cutting being done by the sharp ends of the angle. The knife 6 is prevented from cutting into the trencher board or support 9 by a downwardlyprojecting bent end 8 of the knife. The side of the knife is in the same plane as the side 7 of the bar 1 so that it acts as a guide bearing against the cut side of the root 10. Fig. 8 shows a knife blank 6 before being bent and removably attached to the bar 1 by a screwed bolt. In Fig. 11, the root 10 is reciprocated by hand over a plate 15 to a stationary knife 6, the slices 11 falling into a box 18. The auxiliary plate 15 spaced from the plane of the plate 1 determines the slice thickness.
