Abstract

Sec.-Undecylhydroquinone is prepared by adding zinc chloride to a heated mixture of hydroquinone and undecene-1, and hydrolysing the catalyst with dilute hydrochloric acid. 2-Methyl-5-(2-octadecyl)-hydroquinone is similarly prepared. Sec.-Undecylquinone is prepared by adding concentrated sulphuric acid dropwise to an aqueous-acetone solution of sec.-undecylhydroquinone, and then adding aqueous sodium dichromate solution dropwise. n-Octadecylquinone is similarly prepared. Potassium sec.-undecylhydroquinonemonosulphonate is prepared by adding an ethanol solution of sec.-undecylquinone dropwise to an aqueous solution of sodium acetate, acetic acid, and sodium bisulphate, evaporating to dryness under vacuum, dissolving the residue in water, and adding potassium chloride. Potassium n-octadecylhydroquinone-x-sulphonate and potassium 2 - methyl - 5 - sec. - octadecylhydroquinone-x-sulphonate are similarly prepared. 5 - Sec. - octadecyl - 2 - (2 - sulpho - tert.-butyl)-hydroquinone (potassium salt) is prepared by reacting together 2-(2-(sec.-octadecyl)-hydroquinone and sodium 2-methylpropenesulphonate in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid and adding saturated potassium chloride solution to an aqueous solution of the product. 2 : 5 - Bis - {b - [3 - (p. - tert. - amylphenoxy)-x - sulpho] - benzamidoethyl} - hydroquinone is prepared by hydrolysis of 2 : 5-bis-{b -[3-(p-tert. - amylphenoxy) - x - chlorosulphonyl]-benzamidoethyl}-hydroquinone, itself prepared by the reaction of 2 : 5-bis-(b -aminoethyl)-hydroquinone dihydrobromide and x-chlorosulphonyl - m - (p1 - tert. - amylphenoxy)-benzoyl chloride in aqueous acetic acid containing sodium acetate. 2-[21-(2111 : 4111-Di-tert. amylphenoxy) - 5 - (3111 : 5111 - disulphobenzamido) - benzamido] - hydroquinone and 2-[21-(2111 : 4111 - di - tert. - amylphenoxy) - 5 - (3111 : 5111 - dichlorosulphonylbenzamido) - benzamido]-hydroquinone are similarly prepared. 2 - Methyl - 5 - (2 - octadecyl) - quinone is prepared by oxidizing 2-methyl-5-sec.-octadecyl-hydroquinone with acidified sodium chlorate in presence of vanadium pentoxide.
