Abstract

The process of the parent Specification, in which organic hydroperoxides are produced by oxidizing an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound of the formula <FORM:0731002/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, and Ar is an aryl or substituted aryl group, intermittently and alternately with ozonised oxygen, or gases containing same and non-ozonised molecular oxygen or gases containing same, is carried out with the oxygen under a substantial positive pressure. The process is preferably carried out under pressures of 3-5 atmospheres between temperatures of 40-80 DEG C. in presence of sufficient alkali or acid-binding substance to neutralize any acids produced and in presence of catalysts in the form of an inorganic or organic peroxide (e.g. barium, benzoyl or acetyl peroxide, or cumene hydroperoxide), or an inorganic oxide or hydroxide, or sodium stearate, some of which may also function as the acid-binding agent. The process is preferably conducted by adding fresh starting material continuously or discontinuously to the reaction mixture, a corresponding amount of the reaction mixture being continuously or discontinuously removed. The examples describe the preparation of isopropyl benzene hydroperoxide and di-isopropyl benzene mono-hydroperoxide.
