Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula Arn(SiFCl2- nRn)2, where Arf is a divalent perfluoro aromatic ring, including perfluorinated heterocyclic aromatic rings, R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, fluoralkyl, fluoroaryl, fluorine and n is 0, 1 or 2. They may be prepared by reacting Arf(F)SiFCl2- nRn with SiHCl3- nRn. The first reactant may be formed from ArfF2 and SiHCl3- nRn. The reaction is favoured by the presence of heat, ultraviolet light, or chemical initiators to promote the formation of free radicals. The compounds of the invention may be hydrolysed to ArfH2 with strong alkali (see Division C2) or to polysiloxanes with water. The invention is illustrated by the use of C6F6 or C6F5.SiFCl2 with Cl3SiH to give C6F4(SiCl2F)2 and the subsequent hydrolysis of this latter compound to C6F4H2.ALSO:Compounds of formula ArfH2 are prepared by the alkaline hydrolysis of compounds of formula Arf(SiFCl2- nRn)2, where Arf is a divalent perfluoro aromatic ring, including heterocyclic rings, R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, or fluorine, and n is 0, 1, or 2. The production of C6F4H2 (and also C6F5H) by the hydrolysis of C6F4 (SiCl2F)2 with sodium hydroxide is described in Example 1.
