730,817. Continuous - casting machines. BOHLER & CO. AKT.-GES., GEB. Feb. 20, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 4767/53. Class 83 (1). Apparatus for use with continuous-casting plants comprises a support for an ingot cutter, which may be a cutting torch, moved by an endless chain driven synchronously with the ingot-lowering rolls. A platform 10 for the cutting means is arranged for vertical movement adjacent the ingot (not shown). An endless chain 1 extends parallel to the direction of platform movement and is driven so that its movement is synchronous with that of the ingot. A sprocket 3, Fig. 2, secured to the hub of a rope pulley 4 rotates freely with the latter about a spindle 9 on the platform 10. The sprocket is in engagement with one side of the chain and when the pulley 4 is held stationary by an internal expanding brake 7 operated by a lever 6 on the platform, the latter moves downwardly with the ingot and cutting may take place. A rope 5 is arranged vertically and loosely coiled around the pulley 4, the rope ends being secured at the top and bottom. Movement of the lever 6 in the reverse direction to that for applying the brake 7 operates a tensioning device 8 for the rope so that the pulley tends to " climb " the rope and raises the platform for return. The upward movement is at a higher speed than the previous downward movement due to the rope pulley being of larger diameter than the sprocket wheel.
