Abstract

730,775. Rolling-mandrel carriages. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd. July 31, 1953 [May 7, 1952], No. 11587/52. Class 83 (4). In a pilger rolling mill the resilient means on the carriage 4, Fig. 1, for returning the work forward when freed by the gap in the rolls 10 comprises a fixed part such as a pneumatic cylinder 30, a first movable part such as a piston 32 carrying the mandrel 29 and one or more intermediate movable parts such as telescoped cylinders 31, the movable parts being successively arrested in their forward movements to reduce the shock on the carriage 4. The piston 32 is slidably mounted in a liquid container 39 on the carriage 4 and has a shoulder 38 which enters a cylindrical extension 40 in the container to provide a cushion to absorb the shock on arrest of its forward movement. The rear end of the piston 32 slides within the intermediate cylinder 31 which has a pocket 36 to provide a cushion for the end of the piston 32 when forced back by the rolls. Forward movement of the cylinder 31 is arrested by a pneumatic or hydraulic plunger 45 on the container 39. In operation the cylinder 31 and piston 32 initially forced back within the cylinder 30 are forced forward by the pressure in the cylinder 30 when the work is released by the rolls. The cylinder 31 is first arrested by the plunger 45 while the piston 32 continues to move until it is arrested by shoulder 38 engaging in the extension 40. The carriage is progressively fed by a hydraulic ram 5 and is withdrawn to strip the work from the mandrel by a hydraulic ram 6. The work is rotated through 90 degrees after each working stroke by a screw head 49 engaging a recess in the piston 32, the head being intermittently rotated during the backward stroke and returned in position by a ratchet 54 and wheel 52. In a modification the container 39 may be mounted on a forward extension of the cylinder 30 and may have a limited sliding movement on the carriage 4.
