Automatic control equipment for the enginegenerator set of a Diesel-electric vehicle comprises an engine governor to limit engine speed by controlling the quantity of fuel supplied to the engine, means to limit said quantity in two or more ranges, means responsive to current flow in the generator motor loop for controlling the strength of separate excitation current of the generator to maintain a constant generator current at lower vehicle speeds, and speedsensitive electric regulating means independent of the engine governor to maintain a constant engine speed on attainment of a predetermined vehicle speed by regulating the generator load. Thus, the separate excitation circuit may include, in series with the field winding, two carbon piles, the operating coil of one of which is energized in proportion to the generator current, whilst the coil of the other is fed by a tachometer generator driven by the engine, the feed circuit including a variable resistor adjusted by the sliding sleeve of the governor, so that regulation is to full speed only with full charge to the engine.
