Abstract
669,530. Transmitting mechanical power. WANNER, M. Jan. 3, 1946 [Jan. 12, 1945], No. 299/46. Class 38 (iv). An electro-mechanical power transmission system, particularly for a vehicle, comprises a prime-mover 1, which may be an internal combustion engine or an electric motor, driving one element of a differential gear 5, the other two elements of which are connected, respectively, to the driven member 10 and a D.C. machine 6 electrically connected to another machine 3 which rotates with another element of the differential gear. One or both of the machines have separate, shunt, or compound excitation which is automatically controlled, at least in part, in accordance with the speed of an element of the differential gear other than the element to which the machine is coupled or, in the case of an electric prime-mover, in accordance with the power intake of the primemover. As shown, an exciter 14 for field 21 of machine 3 rotates with machine 6, whilst an exciter 15 rotating with both the machine 3 and the prime-mover 1 provides excitation for both machines 3 and 6. Rheostats 16, 17, responsive both to control by a fuel controller 18 and to automatic control, regulate the fields 22, 23 supplied by exciter 15. The automatic control system for the rheostats may include a frequency or voltage-responsive regulator supplied by a machine whose frequency or voltage is a function of the speed of the controlling element of the gear.
