Abstract
730,320. Making turbine blades; rolling. INDUSTRIE-WERKE KARLSRUHE AKT.- GES. Jan. 29, 1953 [Dec. 20, 1952], No. 2599/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A process for the manufacture of turbine blades includes severing a preliminary workpiece from a bar of high heat resistant material, e.g. 80 per cent Ni-20 per cent Cr alloy, performing a series of shaping operations to form a vane and a serrated root without any cutting operation thereon and while the work-piece is in a cold condition. To form a solid blade the work-piece has a part thereof narrowed to form a vane section 2, Fig. 2, and is then pressed to form the vane section 3, Fig. 3, with a flattened root. The root is then pressed to the shape 4, Fig. 5, and the vane section drawn to the shape 6 between shaped rollers 7 and 8. Finally the root is serrated between rollers 9, 10, Fig. 6. To form a hollow blade the work-piece is pressed to form a cup 13, Fig. 8, the wall of which is then drawn out, as at 15, Fig. 9, and the upper rough edge 16 cut off and the vane section is then narrowed at its lower part 17, Fig. 10, and expanded at its upper part 18. Paraffin wax is then poured in the hollow vane and the vane suitably moulded between matrices, the root being serrated by rollers. The wax is removed by melting. In these processes the work-piece is initially dipped in a drawing-lac which forms a porous oil absorbing film when dry, the film being washed off the finally shaped blade.
