Abstract
The invention comprises the cyclohexyl esters of the laevo-, dextro- and racemic threo or erythro or mixed forms of b -phenyl-serine and the L-pyroglutamate thereof. It also comprises a process for preparing racemic cyclohexyl esters of b -phenyl-a -amino acids, in general, wherein the acid is esterified with cyclohexanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Preferably a current of gaseous hydrogen chloride is passed through a heated mixture of b -phenylserine and cyclohexanol. The racemic cyclohexyl ester may be resolved into its optically active forms by combination with an optically active acid such as pyroglutamic acid or d-camphosulphonic acid, fractional crystallization of the products and subsequent hydrolysis. In examples (1) b -phenylserine cyclohexyl ester is prepared, which is converted to its pyroglutamate, recrystallized from ethanol and hydrolysed with aqueous bicarbonate to give the d- and l-isomers; and (2) the cyclohexyl ester of b -phenylserine is resolved as in (1) by recrystallizing the d-camphosulphonate from isopropanol.
