Abstract

The invention comprises (1) organic sulphonium compounds of the formula <FORM:0729464/IV (b)/1> wherein R is hydrogen or an organic radical, R1 is an alkyl radical and X is an organic acid radical containing a -COO- group; and (2) the preparation of these and other sulphonium compounds by treating a water-soluble sulphonium derivative of a 5-thion-1 : 2-dithiole (having a thioketo group incapable of enolization) with an ionizable water-soluble organic metal compound such as an alkali metal salt of an organic acid. Examples are given of the preparation of sulphonium compounds from (1) the dimethyl sulphate derivative of 5-thion-3-(p-methoxyphenyl)-1,2-dithiole [I] and sodium salicylate; (2) the compound [I] and the sodium salt of 1,2,5-sulphosalicylic acid; (3) the dimethyl sulphate derivative of 5-thion-3-phenyl-1,2-dithiole and the sodium salt of 1,2,5-sulphosalicylic acid; (4) the dimethyl sulphate derivative of 5-thion-3-furyl-2,2-dithiole and the sodium salt of 1,2,5-sulphosalicylic acid; (5) the compound [I] and the sodium salt of 1-hydroxy-2-aminophenyl-4-arsenic oxide; (6) the compound [I] and the sodium derivative of thiourea; (7) the compound [I] and the hydrochloride of 3,31-diamino-4,41-disodium-hydroxy-arsenobenzene; (8) the compound [I] and the sodium salt of N,N1-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-carboxy-benzenesulphonyl) -ethylenediamine; (9) the compound [I] and the sodium salt of 4-hydroxy-3 - carboxybenzenesulphonyl - 41 - hydroxy - 31-carboxyanilide; (10) potassium hydrogen succinate and the compound [I]; and (12) sodium p-aminosalicylate and the compound [I].
