Abstract

729,422. Spray carburetters. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 14, 1950 [July 28, 1949], No. 17634/50. Class 7(3). In carburetting apparatus comprising primary and secondary carburetters 12, 13, Figs. 1 and 2, the secondary throttle valve 25 is opened by a device 33 responsive to intake manifold suction and a lever 27, Fig. 2, freely pivoted on one throttle valve shaft is operatively associated with a second lever 28 fixed on the secondary throttle valve shaft 26 in such manner that when the primary throttle valve opening is below a predetermined value the first lever 27 prevents rotation of the second lever 28 in the direction of opening of the secondary throttle valve 25 but when said value is exceeded said first lever 27 permits such rotation of the second lever 28 upon a predetermined value of intake suction being exceeded. In Figs. 1 and 2 the secondary throttle valve 25 is held closed by a spring 32 until the primary throttle valve 15 is approximately half open, when the primary throttle valve actuating mechanism 21, 19, contacts a lever 31 to rotate the lever 27, freely pivoted on the spindle 26, whereby the valve 25 is permitted to open under the action of a suction-actuated diaphragm 34 an amount limited by contact of a pin 29 on the lever 28 with the lever 27. The diaphragm 34 is actuated by the suction at 38 downstream of the valve 25, which suction is cut off from the diaphragm 34 by a spring-loaded valve 40 when the valve 25 is closed and the suction intense. In Fig. 3 the two carburetters are combined in one unit and the primary throttle valve actuating lever 53 is formed with a cam 54 which co-operates with a lever 59 freely pivoted on the spindle 57 of the secondary throttle valve 56 actuated by a suction responsive diaphragm 65 connected to a lever 60 fixed on the spindle 57 and carrying a pin 61 cooperating with the arm 59. The cam 54 holds the valve 56 closed until the valve 51 is part open and then releases the arm 59 to allow the valve 56 to be opened by the diaphragm 65. In a modification the freely pivoted lever is situated on the primary throttle valve shaft and is connected through a toggle linkage adjusted by the diaphragm 65 to a lever fixed on the secondary throttle valve shaft.
