Abstract
729,248. Billet-piercing. HYDROPRESS Inc. Dec. 10, 1952 [Dec. 22, 1951], No. 31325/52. Class 83 (4). A hydraulically-operated billet-piercing press has an upsetting tool 31 carried by a cross-head 29, and a piercing tool 32 carried by a cross-head 23, both of said tools being initially connected together by hydraulic coupling rams 26, 28 and moved in unison by an hydraulic ram 22, operating in a main cylinder 21, so as to upset a billet in a container 34, the pressure liquid in the coupling rams being released when a predetermined pressure is reached in the main cylinder 21 whereby the upsetting tool is stopped whilst the piercing tool pierces the billet. The pressure liquid trapped in the cylinders 28 during the upsetting movement, is released by a valve controlled by an electric timer switch energised by the attainment of said predetermined pressure. A pre-filling valve in the main cylinder 21 allows the idle stroke of the ram 22 to be performed quickly, the pressure stroke being then effected by high-pressure liquid. At the beginning of the piercing movement the upsetting tool is raised slightly by hydraulic motors 44 to permit the billet metal to rise during the piercing. A back-up plunger 41 presses against the underside of the billet and is lowered when adjustable rods 63, acting on a cross-head 56 connected to the plunger, are engaged by the cross-head 23. When the ram 23 stops, the plunger 41 is lowered further to a position 43 by hydraulic cylinders 65. The cross-head 23 is raised by admitting pressure liquid to the cylinder 28 and the cross-head 29 is raised by the motors 44. The billet container 34 is mounted on a slidable carrier 37 which, after withdrawal of the piercing tool, is moved by an hydraulic motor to align the pierced billet with an ejector device 48, Fig. 2 (not shown), operated hydraulically. The piercing tool is subsequently cooled by lowering it into a vessel containing cooling fluid. An electrical-hydraulic control system is described.
