Abstract
A composition for use in the manufacture of foundry moulds and cores comprises a foundry sand containing a small quantity of a water-soluble polymer of an alpha-beta ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, or its ammonium or mono-amine salt. The acid polymer may be partially neutralized with sodium or potassium hydroxide. Polymers mentioned are polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, poly-alpha-chloroacrylic acid, poly-alpha-cyanoacrylic acid ammonium polyacrylate, ammonium polymethacrylate, the ethylamine or propylamine salt of polyacrylic acid, the ammonium salt of an interpolymer of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, the ammonium salt of a partially hydrolysed copolymer of acrylic acid and vinyl acetate, and the ammonium salt of a copolymer of acrylic acid and styrene. The composition may be made into sand moulds by admixture with a little water, moulding the composition into the desired shape and hardening the shaped composition at elevated temperature, e.g. 100 DEG to 450 DEG F. The composition may also include alcoholic polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, partial polyvinyl acetals, pollyallyl alcohol, polymethallyl alcohol or small amounts of saturated polyhydric alcohols which when heated undergo cross-esterification and insolubilization. The foundry sand may be mixed with other ingredients such as silica flour, wood flour, sawdust, fire clays, bentonites, straw, hay, boric acid, iron oxide and sulphuric acid. The composition may also contain small quantities of a quick-release agent such as kerosene or light fuel oil.
