Abstract

Natural calcium carbonate is ground in the presence of one or more fatty acids having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule at a temperature at least equal to that at which carbonic acid is displaced from the carbonate by said acid or acids, thereby forming an adherant coating of the calcium salt or salts of the acid or acids on the carbonate particles. The acids are preferably those found in glycerides of animal or vegetable origin, and the proportion of acid may be from 0.1-10 per cent. by weight of the carbonate. Several varieties of chalk are referred to, as well as calcium carbonates of "saccharoid structure" and of marble type. The minimum temperature as a rule would be at least 80 DEG C. The heat may be supplied by preheated carbonate. The acid may be added as a fine rain or mist, or in the case of an acid solid at the temperature concerned, as a fine powder which is mixed with the carbonate before entry into the mill. The product is suitable as a filler for plastics and paints.ALSO:Natural calcium carbonate is ground in the presence of one or more fatty acids having at least twelve carbon atoms in the molecule at a temperature at least equal to that at which carbonic acid is displaced from the carbonate by said acid or acids to produce a free-flowing product. The acids, which are preferably those found in glycerides of animal or vegetable origin, may be used in the proportion of 0.1-10 per cent by weight of the carbonate. The minimum temperature normally would be at least 80 DEG C., heat being, if desired, supplied by preheating the carbonate. The acid may be supplied as a fine rain or mist before, during orid shortly after the entry of the carbonate into the mill, or as a fine powder before or during said entry. Suitable types of mills mentioned are hammer-mills of the micropulverizer type, pebble mills of the Raymond type, ball mills and roller mills.
