Abstract

728,253. Hypodermic syringes. BICKFORD & SONS, Ltd., A. M. Jan. 15, 1953 [June 18, 1952], No. 1253/53. Class 81 (2). A syringe is provided with a hypodermic needle which may be reversed to project either into the barrel or outwards therefrom, the needle being provided with a plug member either end of which can engage a socket opening through one end of the barrel, means being provided to seal the outwardly directed needle end when the needle is positioned to project into the barrel. The head of the needle 6 is formed from tapered portions 7, 8 secured to a cylindrical grip member 10 by a web 9. Either tapered portion 7, 8 fits into a tapered orifice 5 so that the needle 6 may be arranged to project into the barrel 1 during storage or transit or to project outwards therefrom when the syringe is to be used. A cap 12 is provided to close the projecting end of the needle 6 when the point of the needle 6 is within the barrel 1. A plug 13 is provided to seal a charge 11 of medicament within the barrel 1. A push rod 14 is used to move plug 13 towards the needle end of the barrel 1 for expulsion of medicament. In an alternative construction (not shown), the push rod is fitted over the grip member 10 of the needle 6 during transit or storage.
