A secondary emitting electrode consisting of a silver-magnesium alloy, which has a surface layer of magnesium oxide formed by heating in an atmosphere of water vapour or other oxidizing agent which does not diffuse into the alloy as readily as free oxygen, is then further treated by heating in free oxygen. The oxygen diffuses into the alloy and " freezes " by oxidation the free magnesium therein, so that it does not evaporate with deleterious effects during operation. The treatment can be carried out at temperatures from about 500‹ C. almost up to the melting point of silver (960‹ C.) for periods from 5 minutes up to half an hour or more, depending on temperature and pressure. The oxygen pressure is not critical, and can vary from a few mm. to several atmospheres. A suitable alloy consists of 98.3 per cent silver and 1.7 per cent magnesium. Other suitable agents for forming the oxide layer besides water vapour are carbon dioxide, nitrogen pentoxide, or alcohols. A suitable technique is described. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates graphically the improved emission resulting from the processing according to the invention.
