Abstract
728,119. Pipe joints. LIQUID CARBONIC CO., Ltd. (Liquid Carbonic Corporation). Oct. 13, 1952, No. 8778/54. Divided out of 728,083, [Group VI]. Class 99 (1). [Also in Group VI] A pipe 31<SP>1</SP> extending from a refrigerating tube 8 passes through the walls of inner and outer tanks 7, 1, of a cooling and carbonating apparatus. The tanks 1, 7 contain CO 2 and the pipe 31<SP>1</SP> is connected with a conduit 18 carrying refrigerant to the tube 8 by a coupling which prevents CO 2 from seeping into the refrigerating line and prevents the refrigerant from seeping into the CO 2 atmosphere within the tanks. The pipes 18 and 31<SP>1</SP> make a butt joint with each other and are drawn together by bolts 44 which pass through undercut flanges 34, 36 welded to the tank 1 and pipe 18 respectively. Secured on the pipe 31 by a stop ring 39 are packing members 42, 43 having a vent gland 40 therebetween which has an annular recess 41 from which opens a vent 45. By confining the leakage of either refrigerant or CO 2 to the small vent 45, detection of such a leak is facilitated. A sealing grommet 32 of rubber or other plastic surrounds the conduit 31<SP>1</SP> where it passes through the tank 7.
