In an assembly comprising a pump and its electric driving motor, the motor casing comprises a unitary part including the whole or most of the axially extending portion of the casing and its end cover remote from the pump and a second part comprising a separable end cover at the end adjacent the pump, and the second part is provided with an axially directed hollow extension to the free end of which is attached the pump casing, a base support being integral with or fixedly connected to the separable end cover and the hollow extension. The electric driving motor 1 of a centrifugal pump 2 is housed in a casing comprising a main part 6 and a separable end cover 7. The latter has an open extension 8, to the free end of which is attached the pump casing 9. A base support 5 is integral with the end cover 7 and its extension 8. After removal of the pump impeller 3 from the shaft 4 and removal of bolts 14, the motor, with its casing part 6 and the shaft 4, can be removed without disturbing the base support 5. Similarly, the pump casing 9 can be removed after removal of bolts 15. The motor is cooled by a fan impeller 27 which draws in air through holes 28 and discharges it through an annular passage 29. The pressure in the passage 29 is communicated by way of ducts 31 to the space 32 between a bearing 17 and a seal 24, to prevent pumped fluid from seeping along the shaft towards the bearing 17 and the motor. In a modification, the pressure is communicated instead to a space between the seal 24 and an apertured disc which surrounds the shaft with a clearance, so that air escapes from the space through the clearance to oppose the seepage of fluid along the shaft.
