Abstract

728,039. Dashpots. BROWN BROS. & CO., Ltd., and MITCHELL, C. C. Feb. 17, 1953 [Feb. 28, 1952], No. 5249/52. Class 108 (3). A dashpot of the type including a cylinder 1 open at one end only to receive a plunger and maintained full of fluid (e.g. water or steam) in a state of spin by.a stream or jets 3 of fluid projected into the open end of the cylinder, the cylinder being formed with at least one radial vent hole 4 at its closed end to allow air bubbles to escape, is characterized by the provision of at least one radial vane 7 located within the cylinder at the closed end. The vane.is preferably located so as to be at a small angle in advance, i.e. upstream, of the vent hole in relation to the direction of spin of the fluid, and serves to convert some of the kinetic energy of the fluid into pressure energy so that the core of fluid in the cylinder flows vigorously towards the mouth of the cylinder and carries off entrapped air with it.
