Abstract

A therapeutic composition for oral administration comprises theophylline, or an alkali metal-free theophylline salt, and an alkali metal-free, substantially insoluble, non-absorbable slow-acting antacid compound such as aluminium hydroxide gel, aluminium phosphate gel or magnesium trisilicate. Specified theophylline salts are those with ethylene diamine, diethanolamine and calcium salicylate. The ratio of antacid such as aluminium hydroxide gel to theophylline, or salt thereof, is 1 to 3, and preferably 2 to 3, to 1.
