Abstract

727,676. Photographic transfer process. KODAK, Ltd. Sept. 1, 1953 [June 25, 1952], No. 16008/52. Class 98 (2). Transfers are obtained from an exposed material containing a light-sensitive diazo compound, by contacting it in the presence of moisture with an absorbent receiving support, whereby diazo compound diffuses from the unexposed parts into the support, where it is caused to couple with an azo dye coupling compound in the presence of alkali. Up to twelve copies can be obtained by repeating the process. The receiving support is preferably impregnated with alkali and the coupling component before being contacted with the exposed material, but it may contain the coupler only and be treated after contact with ammonia gas or an alkaline solution, or ammonia solution may be used to moisten it before it is contacted with the exposed sheet. Plain paper also may be used as a receiving sheet being treated, after contact with an alkaline solution of the coupler. The moisture required for the transfer may be contained in the receiving sheet as water of crystallization of an alkaline salt, such as Na 3 PO 4 .12H 2 O. In this case the sheets are not moistened, but contacted under pressure at 130‹ C. for 5 seconds, when the water of crystallization is released. The diazonium salt used for the sensitized sheet may be derived from di-ethyl amino toluene hydrochloride, 3 - methyl - 4 - (N : N - di-ethyl amino) aniline, 4 - (N - ethyl - N - ethoxy ethyl amine) aniline, 2 : 5 - dimethoxy - aniline, p : p<SP>1</SP>- diaminostilbene, 3 - methyl - 4 - amino - N- ethyl - N - [# - (methylsulphonamido) - ethyl]- aniline, 2 - methoxy - 4 - amino - 5 - methyl - N : N-diethyl aniline, 4-amino-diphenylamine, N - (4 - aminophenyl) - piperidine, or 1 : 8- dihydroxy - 2 - (p - aminophenylazo) - 3 : 6- disulphonaphthalene. The coupling compound may be an aromatic amine, a phenol, or a compound containing a reactive methylene group. Compounds specified are phloroglucinol, 1-(psulphophenyl) - 3 - pentadecyl - 5 - pyrazolone, 1 - phenyl - 3 - {3<SP>1</SP> - [2<SP>11</SP> - (2<SP>111</SP> : 4<SP>1111</SP> - diamylphenoxy) - 5<SP>11</SP> - (2<SP>1111</SP> - sulphobenzoylamino)- benzoylamino] - benzoylamino} - 5 - pyrazolone, N - lauryl - p - aminophenol, 4 : 5 - di - sec.- dodecyl - catechol, 5 - pentadecyl - resorcinol, 1 : 2 - di - (21 - hydroxy - 31 - naphthamido)- ethylene and the compound obtained by reacting benzoylaceto-p-aminoanilide with a styrene-maleic anhydride interpolymer.
