Abstract
714,106. Photographic reproduction process. KODAK, Ltd. March 24. 1953 [March 24, 1952], No. 7551/52. Class 98(2) A silver image in a photographic emulsion layer is used to destroy imagewise a diazonium compound through the action of a bleaching agent of the silver-dye-bleach type, the diazonium compound either having been originally incorporated into a receiving absorbent support or else diffusing into such support after imagewise destruction, whereafter the diazonium compound is caused to couple with an azo coupler to form an azo dye image. The silver image may be contacted with the receiving support in presence of the diazonium compound, bleaching agent, coupler, and acid, and the receiving support separated after imagewise destruction and then made alkaline, as with ammonia, to cause coupling to form the azo dye. The diazonium compound, the coupler, the bleaching agent and acid may be disposed in the emulsion layer or the receiving support; if the azo dye components are not both in the receiving support the latter may also contain an alkaline compound. Numerous alternative dispositions for the various materials are described. In the preferred embodiment a silver reflex print-on paper is impregnated with a solution of a diazonium compound and bleaching agent after acid stop bath treatment, contacted with another piece of paper containing a layer of gelatin, coupler and alkali for one or two seconds and then separated, to leave a positive image on the gelatin-coupler paper. In a modification diazosulphonates replace the diazonium compounds and coupling is effected after exposure to light or activation as with sodium hypochlorite solution. Seven examples describe, quantitatively, the various alternatives. Multicoloured prints may be made by successive transfers of diazonium images on to paper coated successively with couplers for the desired colours.
