Abstract

A prefused or sintered granular flux for use in submerged arc welding comprises TiO2 18-50 per cent, MnO 10-30 per cent, SiO2 20-40 per cent, F 0-10 per cent, Li up to 1 per cent, other ingredients up to 20 per cent. Rutile, MnO2 or Mn3O4, fluorspar, felspar, or silica, and sodium carbonate may be fused and held at 1200-1400 DEG C. until gas evolution ceases, the mixture being then granulated by chilling, dried and crushed. In modifications, the mixture may be sintered; the flux may also comprise Al2O3, Sr, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb or ferro-alloys; the Mn may be added as Fe-Mn; and the fluorine may be added as CaF2. Fluorspar or CaF2 may also be added to the flux after fusion or sintering.
