Abstract

In a process of automatic submerged arc welding, a continuous electrode is used consisting of flat and curved metal strips enclosing a filling of flux and/or deposit forming material. The filling of a mild steel electrode may be: .Chromium.25 .High carbon ferrochrome.25 .Ferro-molybdenum.15 .Fluorspar.35 .or. .Ferro-molybedenum.42 .High carbon ferrochrome.42 .Ferro-manganese.5 .Fluorspar.10 .Sodium alginate.1 To clad mild steel with a steel containing 27 Cr, 3 C, the strips 19, 20 are of steel containing 17-28 Cr and the filling may be: .Graphite.30 .High carbon ferrochrome.60 .Fluorspar.9 .Organic extrusion aid.1 A wear resistant deposit is produced by a filling consisting of tungsten carbide 98 1/2 -ferromanganese 1 1/2 between mild steel strips. In each case the filling is bonded with potassium or sodium silicate. Suitable submerged arc welding fluxes are: ..1.2 .silica.25-50.35-50 .limestone.20-45.- .calcium fluoride.3-15.4-10 .manganese oxide.0-15.30-50 .sodium fluoride.0-15.- .alumina.0-15.0- 6 .calcium oxide.-.0-10 .magnesium oxide.-.0- 6
