Abstract

A process for coating hard metals comprises coating the said hard metal with a composition consisting of a brazing metal in atomized powder form, Fe, Ni, Co, W or other metal powder which is capable of being wetted by the brazing metal and during the heating does not dissolve completely in the brazing metal, a thermoplastic resin which distils without substantial residue, e.g. polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polymethyl methacrylate, and an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, and heating the coated hard metal in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a high enough temperature for the brazing metal to melt and wet the surface of the hard metal. A hard metal tool may be made by brazing the coated hard metal to steel, or reducing the said coated metal to the desired size and clamping it to a steel body. Examples are given wherein iron and copper powders are used.
