Abstract

The invention, the object of which is to provide easily removable cores for wax patterns for use in precision casting by the lost wax process, consists in forming a wax pattern conforming to the external shape of the article to be cast by investing with wax, known as pattern wax, a core which conforms to the internal shape of the article and is constituted by a wax which is soluble in a medium in which the pattern wax is substantially insoluble, preferably in intimate mixture with a filler such as fine sand, and removing the core from the solidified investment of pattern wax by solvent treatment. One part by weight of polyethylene glycol 1,000, a water-soluble wax with a melting point of 35 DEG -40 DEG C., is melted and into it are thoroughly mixed three parts by weight of crushed firebrick of 60-mesh grain size. The mixture is slowly poured into a core-box which is vibrated until the mixture has set. The core so formed is removed, placed in a die and invested with pattern wax. When the wax pattern has set it is removed from the die and placed in water to dissolve out the soluble core, which may have ports for the solvent. With pattern wax having an injection temperature of 60 DEG -80 DEG C., a suitable temperature for the water is 40 DEG C. Specifications 704,004 and 722,816, [both in Group XXII], are referred to.
