Abstract

727,240. Friction clutches. LAMBERT BRAKE CORPORATION. Nov. 29, 1951 [Aug. 7, 1951], No. 28051/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXIV]. A friction clutch, which may also be used as a brake, comprises relatively rotatable shafts 101, 102 connectable by discs 122, 123 within a sealed housing 116; a two-part member comprising a first part (or presser plate) 112 fast on the shaft 101 and a second part (or throw out plate) 115 coupled to the housing, relative movement between the first and second parts serving to engage the friction discs 122, 123; springs 126 urging the first and second parts away from one another; and camming balls 127, responsive to relative rotation between the first and second parts resulting from slip between the engaged friction discs 112, 123, for increasing the separation of the parts to increase the frictional engagement between the discs. Oil seals 129, 131, 132 and 134 are provided between the parts, so that the clutch discs are kept dry even when the housing is immersed in oil. The housing 116 is moved to the left to engage the clutch by the action of the springs 126, an adjustably positioned pressure plate 119 then engaging the friction discs, and to the right for disengagement by rotating a ring 138 on a fixed support 135, balls 139 in conical recesses providing the usual cam action to move the ring axially which movement is transmitted to the clutch through a thrust bearing 141. Specification 727,308 is referred to.
