Abstract
726,356. Cutting-out presses. BAUMGARTNER, J. R. May 4, 1953, No. 12331/53. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVI] An apparatus, for feeding predetermined lengths of web material to a press, including a pair of continuously driven feed rolls is characterized in that one of the rolls is rotatably journalled on a support which is movable away from the other roll by hydraulic means controlled by a cam mechanism operated in synchronism with the press to render the feed rolls intermittently inactive for a predetermined period regardless of the thickness of the web being fed. A web W, Fig. 1, to be cut and creased by platens 14 and 15, is fed over a curved plate 29 by continuously driven rollers 33, 34, and 35, between curved plates 67 and 68 which form the web W into a loop L, and past a braking means to continuously driven feed rollers 36 and 37. The platen 14 is fixed, while the platen 15 is reciprocated along uprights 13 by a connecting rod 19. Either platen may carry cutting and creasing discs 16 co-operating with a base plate 17 on the opposing platen. The feed roller 37, Fig. 6, is carried by a shaft 86 supported by members 85 pivoted on a shaft 84. The shaft 84 carries a crank arm 89 engaged by a spring-pressed plunger 59a and a hydraulically-operated piston 90 slidable in a cylinder 91 and urged outwardly by a spring 92. A pipe 93 connects the cylinder 91 with a chamber 94, Fig. 7, of a pump cylinder 95. A plunger 96 actuated by a rotary cam 101 is slidable in the cylinder 95, the plunger being urged outwardly by a spring 97. A port 98 connected to a pipe 99 supplies hydraulic fluid from a reservoir. Should the web increase in thickness while being fed by the rollers 36 and 37, Figs. 6 and 7, the roller 37 swings the crank arm 89 clockwise, thus allowing the piston 90 to move outwardly, such that more fluid enters the cylinder 95 through the port 98. Thus, the piston continuously engages the arm 89 to cause movement of the roller 37 away from the roller 36 when a part 102 on the cam 101 depresses the plunger 96. The length of web fed at each engagement of the rollers 36 and 37 may be varied by replacing a change-speed gear 116, Fig. 1, carried by pivotal arms 118 and 119. The gear 116 engages a gear 117 on the shaft 22 carrying the cam 101 and a gear 115 which drives a gear 112 which through a chain 109 and sprockets 110 and 108 drives the shaft 38 of the roller 36. The shaft 38 drives the roller 33 through bevel gearing at half the speed of the rollers 36, such that the loop L lengthens during the non-feeding period of the rollers 36 and 37. The roller 35 may be spaced from the roller 34 for threading a web by rocking supporting arms 56 through a crank 58 engaged by an air-actuated piston 65. The crank 58 is also engaged by a spring-pressed plunger 59, the nip between the rollers 33, 34 and 35 being adjustable by varying the pressure acting on the plunger 59. The rollers 36 and 37 are similarly actuated by a plunger 59a, Fig. 6, and piston 65a. The braking means comprises an upper fixed bar 73 and a movable bar 74 normally spaced apart to permit passage of the web W. When the roller 37 disengages the roller 36 the shaft 84 rocks resilient arms 83, carrying screws 82, towards the bar 74, such that the web is clamped between the bars 73 and 74.
