Abstract
455,684. Printing-machines ; feeding sheets. OXVAR, Ltd., 3, Lower Regent Street, London.-(Oxford Varnish Corporation; Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) March 12, 1936, No. 7421. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] Rotary machines; inking-mechanism ; set-off; preventing.-A surface - decorating machine comprises a transfer roll, inking- roll, and a pattern roll supporting device carried by a frame and so adapted to support several different sizes of pattern roll in contact with the transfer roll and in intimate association with the inking-roll, that the axes of the various sized pattern rolls are retained in a line substantially parallel with a hyperbola formed by the locus of a point equidistant from the peripheries of the transfer and pattern rolls. Intaglio pattern rolls 15, Fig. 2, of different diameters may be rotatably mounted in half-bearings 41a, 41b, 41c carried by a fixed arm 42 and a pivoted arm 44, which are clamped together by a hinged screw 46 and nut 47. The shaft of each roll carries a bevel-gear 73, Fig. 4, of appropriate size and adapted to mesh with a driven gear 71 so that the peripheral speed of each roll is the same. The gear 71 is splined to a shaft 55 and can be retained in each of three positions by a pin 72. The shaft 55 is driven from a motor 50 through reduction gearing 51 and bevel gears 53, 54. The shaft 55 also drives, through gears 58, 59, a main gear 61, which drives a pulley 64 and thence, through a band 67 the inking-roller 17 and offset roller 16. The inking-roller 17 is supported by a yoke on levers 37 pivoted at 210 and which may be clamped in adjusted position by screws 40 acting in slots in the levers. The axle 20 of the offset roller is mounted in levers 21, pivoted at 22 and which can be swung into and out of active position by a lever 27, pivoted at 210 and having a cam slot 26 engaging a pin 25 on the arm 21. A spring detent 28 holds the lever 27 in either extreme position and the pin 25 is eccentrically mounted to give a fine adjustment for the offset roller. The inking- roller 17 rotates in an ink pan 120 and carries on its shaft rollers 131 in contact with the pattern roller 15 and is of such diameter that the pattern-roller and inking-roller are separated by a distance less than the thickness of the ink-film. The pattern-roller is scraped by a blade 80, carried by a shaft 81 and pressed into contact with the roll by a weighted arm 87. The shaft 81 may be mounted in any of three bearings 82 and is reciprocated by a lever 97, whose other end carries a pin 99 engaging a cam 100 driven from the gear-wheel 62. The bearing block 82 may be adjusted by bolts 84 and slots 85. The offset roll 16, which has a surface of congealed glue and glycerine, is scraped by a blade carried by a shaft 105 and which is pressed into contact by a weighted arm 213 and adjusted by screws 93 on arms 91. The blade is reciprocated by mechanism similar to the lever 97 and also driven from the gear 62. When the offset roller is rocked out of contact with the pattern-roll by the action of the lever 27, an arm 211 on the pivot 210 of the lever 27 engages an arm 212 on the shaft 105 and disengages the scraper blade from the offset roll. The leather work-pieces W are mounted on a web 150 by adhesive or adhesive stickers and drawn through the machine by a take-up roll with a friction band drive from the gear 62. A continuous fabric web 160, which is also frictionally driven from the gear 62 presses the work-pieces into contact with the web 150. A spring-pressed roller 163 and two iron rods 173, 171 smooth the work-pieces. The rod 171 is carried by arms 175 and adjusted by cams 176 on screw-adjusted arms 179, so that its tensioning pressure on the web 150 can be varied. A platen roller 18 is carried by arms 31 and its printing pressure can be adjusted by screws 33. Delivery apparatus.-After impression the work-pieces are stripped from the web 150 by a knife mounted on a delivery table.
