726,354. Casting-machines. GRIFFIN WHEEL CO. April 21, 1953, No. 10945/53. Addition to 718,744. Class 83 (1). In a method of casting comprising the steps of positioning a tube 18 with its lower end immersed in a bath of molten metal 26 within a sealed chamber 35 and positioning a mould 2 with its gate 14 communicating with the tube, sub-stmospheric pressure is developed in the chamber to lower the metal in the tube to approximately the bottom thereof, and then super-atomospheric pressure is developed in the chamber to urge the metal through the tube into the mould, the flow of metal to the mould being terminated when the mould is filled by moving a plunger valve 42 against the gate to close same. The tube is inclined to the vertical and its lower end may be closed by a fusible cap to prevent the entry of slag when entering the molten metal reservoir. A riser 12 is positioned at the highest point of the mould cavity, and the distance between the plungerseat 44 and the gate-seat 46 is substantially less than the distance between the plunger-seat and the upper surface 48 of the hub section of the mould cavity, to reduce pumping action of the plunger on the metal in the mould. In other respects the mould and chamber are substantially as described in the parent Specification.
