725,959. Transmitting mechanical power. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIVUND MASCHINENFABRIK. Feb. 24, 1953 [March 15, 1952], No. 5121/53. Class 38 (4). To avoid the necessity of separate tractiveeffort-limiting starting resistors connected in series with the generator field regulator resistor in an automatic control system for a Diesel electric locomotive, of the kind wherein, for each position of the fuel lever, the prime mover is regulated to constant speed and power by an engine-driven governor acting on the fuel intake and, through a fluid-pressure servomotor, on the generator field regulator, the regulator is provided with sufficient resistance to enable it to perform also the duty of the starting resistors and driver-controlled means acting on the servomotor are provided for controlling the resistance range over which automatic control of the regulator is possible. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a manual controller, not shown, carrying a lost-motion coupling 30, 33, which determines the travel allowed to the piston 17 of a servomotor 16 for the field regulator 15. The manual controller also controls the loading on the engine governor and, through links 24, 14 the fuel valve setting. In modified arrangements the limitation of the travel of the piston is effected by a pair of adjustable stops which either control auxiliary valves of the servomotor or modify the working of the main valve.
