Abstract
582,359. Automatic control systems ; transmitting mechanical power. GLENNY, A. P.. Aug. 19, 1943, No. 29368/45. Divided out of 576,420, [Group XXIX]. [Class 38 (iv)] Speed.-In a control system for a motor vehicle propelled by an internal-combustion engine, the difference between the voltage of a generator driven by the engine and the output voltage of a potentiometer adjusted in accordance with the degree of throttle opening, serves to control the ratio of a variable-speed transmission mechanism of the vehicle so as to set the engine speed automatically in accordance with the degree of throttle opening. An internal-combustion engine 1 drives a D.C. generator 31 connected to a series motor 3 driving the road wheels 2 of a motor vehicle. The generator field 32 is energized from a battery 33a through a potentiometer 37 which is automatically adjusted by a reversible motor 35. The supply to motor 35 is the difference between the voltage of an auxiliary generator 34, driven by the engine, and the voltage supplied by a potentiometer 39 from battery 33a. Thus, potentiometer 37 automatically regulates the speed ratio of the electrical transmission system to maintain the engine speed constant at the value for which the voltage of generator 34 equals the voltage supplied by potentiometer 39. The setting of potentiometer 39 is. dependent on the setting of an accelerator pedal 23, controlling the engine throttle , so that the engine speed is maintained at a different value for each throttle setting. The Provisional Specification refers to arrangements in which : (a) the potentiometer operated by the accelerator varies the field of a constantspeed generator providing the voltage opposing that of the engine-driven auxiliary generator ; (b) the variable speed transmission is not continuously variable.
