Abstract

725,898. Cutting and comminuting grass. TORO MANUFACTURING CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA. July 28,1953, No. 20961/53. Class 6 (3). [Also in Group II] A grass-cutting and comminuting machine comprises a wheeled frame carrying a cylindrical open-based housing 12 in which rotates a horizontal blade 31 with an upwardly-inclined trailing edge to create an upward air-draught within the housing, the rear wall 16 of the housing being provided with perforations 17 and the lower end of the front wall 22 being fitted with an air-deflector 23 to re-direct descending air-currents upwardly so that grass-cuttings can leave the housing only through the perforations 17, when fully comminuted, to fall on to the ground behind the machine. The frame includes side-members which carry the rear-wheels 9 and are extended to form the handle 11 by which the machine is pushed. A motor M drives the blade 31 through a belt-drive 40, the height of the blade above the ground being variable by the insertion of bushes 35 on the cutter-spindle 26. The front of the machine is carried on wheels 19 journalled on the housing 12. In a modification, the deflector 23 is integral with the front wall of the housing, and both may be removed when cutting very long grass.
