[Also in Group II] A shaft furnace for heat treating pellets of ores or other mineral solids comprises an induration chamber A to which the pellets are delivered and a cooling chamber B from the bottom of which they are discharged, the flow of gases upwardly through the furnace being partly from openings 11 supplied with cooling air by a blower 16 and fitted with probes 12 to prevent agglomeration of pellets, and partly gases at about 2000‹ F. obtained from the combustion chamber 6 provided with fuel at 20 and dust-free air by blowers 23.
