Abstract
725,311. Stuffing-box substitutes. HENSCHEL & SOHN GES. Feb. 17, 1953 [Feb. 18, 1952], No. 4441/53. Class 122 (5). In a condensing locomotive leakage steam from the labyrinth shaft packing gland 6 of the exhaust steam turbine 1 driving the induced draught fan is removed by suction, and thereby prevented from entering the adjacent turbine bearing 4, by connecting the annular leakage space between the gland and the bearing to the smoke box 3. Leakage steam from the gland of the exhaust steam turbine driving the cooling air fans used in the condensing system is similarly removed by connecting the annular leakage space with the cooling-air shaft of the condenser. A live steam-operated ejector nozzle 5 is provided to remove any steam which may leak through the gland when the turbine is not running.
