Abstract

724,963. Torsion bars. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 10, 1953 [March 21, 1952], No. 6521/53. Class 108 (3). A torsion spring system comprises a bar 2 of uniform cross-section throughout its length, having its ends tightly fitting in, and secured in, apertures in a pair of relatively movable members 12 (one only, shown in Fig. 4), the bar 2 having at each end a circular groove located, adjacent the inner opposite faces of the member 12. In Fig. 4 there are two grooves 32, 40 at each end of the bar. The groove 40 may be omitted (Fig. 3, not shown). Alternatively, the groove 32 may be omitted (Fig. 1, not shown), in which case the splines 4 extend to the inner face of the member 12. The splines 16 on the bar 2 may be formed by a thread-rolling machine. The diameter of the aperture in the member 12 is slightly less than the pitch diameter of the splines 16. The splines may be replaced by set-screw means (Fig. 5, not shown). The torsion bar may be of square or octagonal cross-section (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown), in which case a single groove is disposed adjacent the inner face of the member 12, and the diameter of the base of the groove equals the minimum cross-sectional thickness of the torsion bar.
