Abstract

724,875. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 4, 1953 [Aug. 1, 1952], No. 21488/53. Class 35. Stator or rotor slot conductors have their sides cut away to provide longitudinal passages between the slot insulation and the conductors while radial passages in the teeth conduct fluid from the longitudinal passages to the air gap. As shown, the conductors have recesses 20, 21 at intervals in their sides to enable the hydrogen flowing axially along recesses 13 to pass radially and then tangentially into ducts 16 or 17 formed in the teeth, the gas then traversing the air gap and radial ducts in the stator core to reach a cooler in the upper part of the machine, the gas then being re-circulated. Near the centre (axially) of the core some ducts in the teeth extend further inward radially to communicate, with gas passing along ducts 27 at the bottoms of the conductor slots. Such gas passes first radially and then can enter the conductor slots at intermediate points in their radial depth, and flow axially along conductors before passing through other tooth ducts to the air gap. To achieve this the deeper tooth ducts are blocked at the air gap end but have intermediate holes communicating with conductor slots. The conductor and slot arrangement shown for the rotor could be applied alternatively or additionally to the stator.
