Abstract
Alkali metal formate, together with finely divided silica, is produced by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate of a concentration not exceeding 20 per cent (w/v) with carbon monoxide at a temperature above 100 DEG C. while intensely mixing or stirring the solution at increased pressure. The process may be operated continuously by withdrawing a portion of the treated solution after separation of silica for the recovery of alkali metal formate, making up the remainder with fresh aqueous alkali metal silicate solution and recycling. The treated solution leaving the reaction vessel may become substantially saturated with alkali metal formate.ALSO:Finely divided silica, together with alkali metal formate, is produced by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate of a concentration not exceeding 20 per cent. (w/v) with carbon monoxide at a temperature above 100 DEG C. while intensely mixing or stirring the solution at increased pressure. The process may be operated continuously by withdrawing a portion of the treated solution after separation of silica for the recovery of alkali metal formate, making up the remainder with fresh aqueous alkali metal silicate solution, and recycling. The treated solution leaving the reaction vessel may become substantially saturated with alkali metal formate. The silica may be precipitated in the presence of a protective colloid which imparts hydrophobic properties to the precipitated silica, for example stearic acid and organic amines.
