[Also in Group XXIX] In a jacking system of the kind having a plurality of jacks arranged hydraulically in series, the piston of the or each preceding jack in the system operating on one side as a ram piston and on the other side as a pump piston feeding a succeeding jack; the distance to volume ratio of the intake of each succeeding jack is equal to the distance to volume ratio of the pump side of the preceding jack operating as a pump piston, and is also equal to half the distance to volume ratio of the other side of such preceding jack. The invention is described in connection with an adjustable belt conveyer (not shown) for stacking goods on elevated shelves and comprising a conveyer supporting beam arranged to be supported at each side by a jack, but is stated to be applicable to a platform lift provided with two or four jacks. As shown, the cross-sectional area of the bore of the main ack cylinder a is twice the cross-sectional area of the bore of the cylinder b, and twice the cross-sectional area of the piston-rod c. To enable the positions of the two piston-rods to be synchronized, a ball-valve j is adapted to be opened by a member l, m when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, so allowing the fluid to circulate freely past the piston d. The jack b is provided with an air vent h and a bleed valve (not shown) which when this jack is fully extended releases any air therein. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the ball valve is lifted when the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder by a rod provided with a piston so arranged that the rod is withdrawn from contact with the ball when fluid is admitted through port e.
