Abstract
Hydroquinone is obtained by subjecting 1 : 4 - bis (21 - hydroxypropyl - 21) - benzene to treatment with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an electrophillic catalyst, e.g. sulphuric, perchloric, hydrohalic, fluoroboric and silicotungstic p acids, earths activated by acid treatment, catalysts of the Friedel-Crafts type such as aluminium chloride, zinc chloride and boronfluoride and complexes of these latter substances with diethyl ether. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C.
