724,074. Axial-flow compressors. STALKER, E. A. July 21, 1949 [Aug. 5, 1948], No. 19225/49. Class 110 (3). A blade structure, such as for an axial-flow compressor, comprises a plate carrying blades and a hub or cylinder having slots formed in its periphery in which the blades fit. Each rotor comprises two plates 20, 23, Fig. 4, each formed with blades 22, 24 which are spaced so that they fit into alternate slots 26 of a cylinder 25. The blades are fused at their roots to the cylinder wall, as by silver solder, brazing or welding. The plates 20, 23 and a spacer plate 28 may all be fused together and fixed to the rotor shaft. More than two blade plates may be used. The stators are similarly constructed, and the stator blades are fixed at their outer ends to a supporting ring by fusion or by insertion into slots. In the construction shown in Figs. 7 and 11, two plates 40, 41 carry complementary parts 42, 43 respectively of blades 44, the alternate blades 50 being similarly formed by plates 45, 46. The parts 42, 43 are fused together, being scarfed to form a sharp joint at the trailing edge and having a joggled joint at the nose. The blade plates are fixed to a hub 52, preferably by welding. Intercalated with the blades are plates 56 which fit snugly to the contour of the blades but are not fixed to them. The plates 56 are fixed, as by welding, to the outturned flanges of plates 54, 55. In a modification, Fig. 13, each set of blades is made up of three plates 63, 64 and 65 so as to provide eduction or induction slots 74. Specifications 724,120 and 724,170 are referred to.
