In plating articles by passage through an electrodepositing cell, means are provided to produce a higher current density at parts of the article requiring a thicker deposit. As shown, spoons 6 are suspended from racks 10 mounted between guides 13 and provided with rollers 11 moving on rails 12. The level of the rails is arranged to effect immersion of the goods on entry and lifting on completing passage. The goods in their path are separated from anodes 5 by insulating partitions 2 having apertures 7 arranged to concentrate the current flow at prescribed parts of the goods. The apertures may be formed as continuous slots or as rows of round or oval holes. The size of the diaphragm apertures and/or the distance of the insulated walls from the travelling articles may be varied in accordance with the desired thickening. Two or more parallel lines of goods may be passed through a cell, insulating partitions and anodes being provided on either side thereof. The insulating partitions may diverge at the inlet and outlet ends of the cell. The partitions 2 may, if desired, terminate above the bottom of the cell to permit circulation of the electrolyte. The motion of the goods may be continuous, intermittent or to-and-fro, and their path rectilinear or circular.
