723,178. Respiratory appliances. ALMEIDA, J. J. C. DE. Oct. 15, 1952. No. 25893/52. Class 81 (2). Artificial-respiration apparatus comprises a rigid chamber 2, a balloon 1 in the chamber, said balloon communicating with the lungs of the patient and with a source of inhalable gas, means for causing a decrease in the pressure within the said chamber so as to dilate the balloon and to draw gas out of the lungs, and means for causing an increase in the pressure within the chamber so as to deflate the balloon and force gas from the source and from the balloon into the lungs. As shown in the Figure, the balloon is inflated by a decrease the pressure in the chamber 2 due to the action of an induction jet 15 fed with compressed air through a pipe 14. When a valve 17 is closed compressed air is delivered through passage 11 to the chamber 2. collapsing the balloon and forcing gas from the balloon along pipe 3 through a filter 4 and through pipe 5 to the patient's lungs. Oxygen or other gas is supplied at 7. The passage 11 is provided with a safety-valve 12.
