723,166. Washing-machines. WILKINS & MITCHELL, Ltd., and WILKINS, E. W. Aug. 17, 1953 [Aug. 18, 1952], No. 20666/52. Class 138 (2). A washing machine is provided in the base of the washing compartment 12 with a constantly rotated disc-like impeller 10 which is formed on its underside with an inwardly-facing annular channel 15 into which liquid is forced by centrifugal action, means being provided for collecting and drawing off by the action of its own momentum the liquid entrained in the channel 15, whereby the impeller can act as a liquid discharge pump. A discharge pipe 25 has a horizontal portion 26 with an intake opening 27 facing against the direction of rotation. The pipe 25 has a flexible hose 28 secured to it by a cleat 31 carrying a handle 32 whereby the pipe 25 may be pivoted in a boss 29 to move the opening 27 clear of the channel 15. The pipe portion 26 moves across a bracket 33 provided with stops 34 and indentations 35, 36 for indexing the pipe in its operative and inoperative positions. For draining the last few drops of liquid from the compartment, the pipe 25 is provided with one or more openings 37 (Fig. 3) which move out of line with arcuate blocks 38 when the pipe is moved to the inoperative position. An electric heating element 39 is mounted beneath the impeller 10. In a modification (not shown) the discharge pipe is fixed in position and is provided with a control valve.
