Abstract
723,107. Filters. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 27, 1951 [Aug. 15, 1950], No. 17888/51. Addition to 723,200. Class 46. In a filter element interposed between an inlet passage and an outlet passage, and including pleated filtering material surrounding a perforated core and having end plates, a shell closely surrounds the filtering material and is spaced from both plates. An element comprising a cylinder of vertically-pleated resinimpregnated paper or the like 32 around a perforated core 38 has plates 34, 36 cemented to the pleat ends and is held against a head 10 by a spring 48 interposed between the inside of the head and a nut 50 on a rod 46 connected to the lower plate 36. A shell 54 also of resin-impregnated paper or the like is secured by an adhesive to the outside edges of the pleats, leaving annular flow passages 56, 58 between its ends and the plates 34, 36, respectively. The shell provides for longitudinal flow during backwashing and filtering which tends to free or keep free from dirt the surfaces of the pleats. Also the impact of liquid against the end plates during backwashing removes dirt from them. The perforations 52 of the core 38 are preferably concentrated near the upper end as shown.
